Headaches

There are many different types of headaches and knowing each type is essential in order for proper treatment to be applied. Different headaches have different set of symptoms and different kinds of headache treatment.

It’s important to have this assessed thoroughly by the physiotherapist to help determine the type of headache, and the best course of action to relieve it.

Headache can be caused by disorders of the muscles and joints of the jaw and neck. Our physiotherapist can successfully treat headaches caused by these mechanical origins (muscle and joint problems). They can also help educate you on how to prevent these from returning.

Headache symptoms associated with the jaw and neck :

  • can be brought on by jaw and/or neck movement.
  • can have pain radiating from the back of the neck or head to the front of the head.
  • the pain can be on the same side always.
  • The pain can be eased by pressure to the back or sides of the head

Treatment of Headaches

Depending on what type of headache you have the treatment could vary. Most mechanical headaches respond well to a combination of gentle manual therapy (Myofascial release, and joint mobilization), and exercise to strengthen and stretch the area affected.

Headaches with other symptoms such as blurry vision, nausea, vomiting, fever, neck pain and stiffness and sensitivity to light or noise, will require the attention of your physician.
